Project financed by the Lifelong Learning Programme (LLP) of the European Commission, under the Comenius scheme (for general education) with our Spanish and European partners, 2007-10.

Project number: 134367-LLP-2007-ES-COMENIUS-CNW. The projects continues the successful cooperation under the coordination of UNED, the Spanish National University for Distance Education.

Main objectives of the project

Its aims are

1. To identify teacher training needs from an intercultural education perspective. This analysis will provide us with information regarding current state of the art in teacher training in any of the participant institutions; in this way we will find out which are the needs regarding:
a. Images of diversity: what and how cultural differences are addressed.
b. Educational policies and laws regarding cultural diversity
c. Teacher training initiatives in higher education (goals, contents, audiences, resources, evaluation)

Background

From 2002-5, the first INTER project had contributed to innovation in schools by supporting them in the implementation of an intercultural approach, fostering reflection on and providing a practical tool for initial and in-service training of teachers. The project focused on developing, using, and validating a practical guide which facilitates analysis, implementation and improvement of intercultural education in schools. The principal project output, "INTER: A practical guide to implement Intercultural Education", has been also published as a book within the navreme series of publications, as volume 4. The INTER conference in April 2005 discussed and disseminated the findings to a wider audience.

Finally, INTER was awarded the European Award for Intercultural Education by the Evens Foundation in Antwerp (BE). This European Prize is awarded to a project or organization deemed to have made an outstanding contribution to European social integration in the field of intercultural education, and who have demonstrated determination and creativity.

Cooperation with several partners continued in the reserch project financed by the Spanish authorities "Estrategías de integración y prevención de racismo en las aulas", where analysis and practical advice for teachers are produced in order to foster integration and to reduce racism in schools. The analysis of racism was published by navreme as volume 6 (Racism: A Teenagers's Perspective). Building on it, a "Guide to Talking About Racism in Schools" was produced, published as volume 8 of the navreme series.

Since spring 2007, our parallel project INTER-Alfa (the EU's scheme for academic cooperation between Europea and Latin America) finances the joint development of a M.A. curriculum on "Intercultural Education", to be implemented thereafter at participating universities in Europe, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Mexico.
